Dr. Murphy was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in the Northern Virginia area. She received her BA with high distinction in psychology from the University of Virginia in 1984. After graduating she then married and worked as a regional manager for Vanguard Management, a medical management and consulting firm. After her children began school, Dr. Murphy entered the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1997 and graduated with distinction in 2001 as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. She then went to complete her Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine in 2004 at George Washington University.
Dr. Murphy has worked as a volunteer physician for free clinics in the Washington, D.C. area, as well as at Echo Hill summer camp along the Chesapeake Bay.
Her interests outside of the office include running, traveling, hiking, skiing, and swing dancing. She is married to Dr. Patrick Murphy, an Emergency Medicine Physician at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. They have two children. Lauren is a student at the University of Virginia and Ian is a student at Lake Braddock Secondary School.
